New ways of dealing with wastewater possibly part of a solution?
Dr. Ir. Zeeman at Wageningen University, The Netherlands, started a joint research project called DESAH in 2001. It ran until 2007. Dr Zeeman's aim was to design and develop an alternative to traditional sewer systems. Western sewer systems are huge, mix all wastewater streams and treat them centrally. This is not necessarily the best possible method.

DESAH envisaged much smaller local systems that would work much more efficiently (think of biogas, for instance). A prior study found that a DESAH system would already break even at 1200 people, based on the situation in The Netherlands. In areas with no sewer systems, the advantages would be much greater.

Europe's troubled seas
RTD Info - Magazine on European Research - dedicated an article in its July 2003 issue to the problems in the Mediterranean and Black Sea and another one on IASON (International Conference on the Sustainable Development of the Mediterranean and Black Sea Environment).
